The days go by fast, with the long nights and the constant rotation of eating, diaper changing, and trying to take care of yourself, being a parent takes its toll.
I feel like the biggest thing a parent can do is take care of themselves. You're only as good to your child as you are mentally and physically healthy. That being said I've found these 5 things to have helped the most during these first few weeks.
1. Manage Expectations
- Know that your biggest goals have a time and a place, you need to be able to give enough of yourself to reach them. Know that your priorities shift when family life gets stressful, adjust expectations accordingly.
2. Train with Intent to get the most out of your time
- Make the most of your training sessions, do you want to get strong? Be stable? Burn Calories? Know what you're training for that day, and excuse precisely and quickly.
3. Daily Power Shake
- Meals can be scarce when your taking care of a little one, so get in your nutrients in any way that you can. Here are some that I like and have tried:
4. Focus on stability
- I found that the best thing to focus on when low on time is Stability. Lower volume needed, not a ton a rest required. You can get a good amount of work in if time is your biggest constraint. Think 2 sets, 6-10 reps with control through the movement. Single arm/single leg and core variations are key here!
5. Do something
- Planned, not planned. Structured or not, do ANYTHING. 10 min or a hour, chose a exercise or walk. Something will always be better than nothing.
